What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file stored by your browser to remember a session, a preference or a measurement. Similar technologies, such as local storage, can serve the same purpose.

Legal framework in Ireland

The storing of and access to cookies in Ireland is governed by Regulation 5 of the European Communities (Electronic Communications Networks and Services) (Privacy and Electronic Communications) Regulations 2011 (S.I. No. 336 of 2011), which requires your prior, informed consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary, and by the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 where cookies involve the processing of personal data. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) supervises compliance with these rules.

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies let you sign in, keep the progress of a questionnaire, apply your security preferences and complete a payment. They cannot be switched off in the preferences panel, because the service would no longer work. They do not require consent.

Analytics and advertising cookies

Analytics cookies (such as Google Analytics measurement cookies) help us understand how the website is used; advertising cookies are used to measure campaigns. These cookies are only set after you have expressly accepted them in the consent banner (Consent Mode). Until you make a choice, they remain disabled.

Managing your choice

You can accept, refuse or configure cookies from the panel shown on your first visit, and change your choice at any time from the “Manage cookies” link in the footer. Refusing is as easy as accepting. You can also delete cookies from your browser settings (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
